Soundarya College of Law, Bengaluru, in association with the District Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru Urban, and in coordination with the Department of Forensic Science, Soundarya Institute of Management and Science, Bengaluru, has organized a ‘Legal Literacy and Awareness Program’ in commemoration of LEGAL SERVICES DAY on 9/11/2023.
This program started with a welcome address by Ms. Monisha M, Assistant Professor, SCL, followed by the first technical session addressed by Mr. Pramod Kumar R, Assistant Professor, SCL, on the topic of the significance of criminal laws. He addressed the students about the procedure for filing criminal complaints, criminal investigation and collection of evidence, criminal trials and judgments in criminal cases.
Another session was addressed by Mr. Hanumanthe Gowda, N.A., In-Charge Principal and Coordinator, Legal Services Clinics, SCL, on Pro-Bono Legal Services under the LSA Act, 1987. In his address, a special reference was made to the various authorities established under the above Act and their role in providing free legal aid and access to justice to the downtrodden and marginalized groups of people.
He gave inputs to the students about pre-litigation services rendered by LSCs of SCL on a pro- bono basis, and he also informed the students to spread the message in the locality about the legal services clinics of SCL and, if needed, to avail pre-litigation services free of charge so that disputes get settled amicably and attain the status of a litigation-free place, which is the prime objective of the Legal Services Authority.
In the interactive session, the student raised a question on child witnesses and their veracity in criminal cases, for which Mr. Pramod Kumar R gave many examples of judgments delivered by trial courts and apex courts based on child testimony. The program concluded with a vote of thanks addressed by Mr. Girisha K., Assistant Professor, SCL.
